BOOK 2 - THE SEIGE OF KANCHI
Coming soon...
“…Aha! There’s some reason for Pulikesi’s love affair, after all!” murmured Paranjyothi.
“Pulikesi’s love affair, Commander? What’re you talking about?” demanded Maamallar.
“Vajrabahu, my warrior friend, mentioned Pulikesi’s obsession with the Lady Kanchi—he said that whenever the name ‘Kanchi’ was mentioned, Pulikesi’s face underwent the transformation of a lover’s countenance at the mention of his beloved’s name…!”
“Commander, the warrior Vajrabahu may have no equal when it comes to valour and intelligence—but that doesn’t justify his foolhardiness in going to meet Pulikesi all alone, does it? What’s your opinion?”
Paranjyothi ignored this question. “My Lord, where’s Naavukkarasar’s monastery, hereabouts?”
…Paranjyothi’s heart melted at Maamallar’s emotional speech. He reached out and clasped the spear held by the Crown prince, unable to say a word.
Narasimha Varmar spoke, his hand retaining its grip on the spear: “Commander, I’ve lost count of the number of times I stood in this Sannithi, yearning for a friend to share my life; I believe that you were sent for that express purpose—as an answer to my prayers. You and I, my friend, will make a pledge this day, in front of God, in this sacred precinct—we’ll swear to make a pact of friendship with this very spear that saved Aayanar and Sivakami from grave danger!”
Deeparaathanai was being performed within the sanctum at that moment, and the huge bells in Lord Ekaambareswarar’s temple tolled in response to that auspicious sign. “Om…Om…Om…”
“…The Crown prince was bemoaning his incarceration within the walls of Kanchi these eight months past, wasn’t he? Well, your majesty, in my opinion, he doesn’t have any reason to. I’ve scanned the fortress walls and the whole city—and I haven’t been able to find a single chink in the armour. He’s transformed our old fortress into a brand new, powerful strong-hold—not even Devendran, or Vhruddaasuran, those heavenly beings, can break down our defences, let alone Pulikesi from Vathapi, and his henchman, Durvineethan from Thalaikkaadu!” announced Commander Paranjyothi.
“What’re the steps he has taken to fortify the fortress, Paranjyothi?” enquired the Empress. “You’ll have to tell me every single detail—Maamallan never tells me anything, you know. I suppose he thinks it’s unnecessary for a helpless female in her anthapuram to even think about such things as wars and battles!”
Kannabiraan jumped out of the chariot, holding onto the reins of his horses all the while. “My dear sister, what on earth are you doing here? When did you get here, and what is this place?” He pelted questions at Sivakami.
“We started out on a journey to Chidambaram, anna,” she replied. “And we stopped here, on our way there. This place is called Asokapuram, I believe…oh, look! There’s the pillar erected by the Emperor Ashoka; didn’t you see it?”
“I’m afraid I don’t have time for sight-seeing—but tell me, why this sudden, unannounced start on a journey, at this time…?”
“We couldn’t bear to stay at home, in the middle of the forest, with a war raging around us. Besides, Kumara Chakravarthy has forgotten us completely, hasn’t he? So—”
“What on earth are you taking about, my dear? Kumara Chakravarthy, to forget…! But you were the first people we came to visit when the Emperor granted us permission to go to war—and you’ve no idea about Maamallar’s anger when he saw your home locked up…!”
“Well, really…! The unmitigated gall of people who’re angry about locked houses, especially when they’d forgotten our existence for eight months…! Be that as it may, where’re you all running off to?”
Kannabiraan climbed back into his chariot as he spoke. “Haven’t you heard about the battle at Pullalur, yet?”
